What is ‘Chinning’ on OSRS?
Monkey Madness is a quest in the Gnome quest series and the sequel to The Grand Tree. It involves helping Narnode Shareen once again by tracking down the missing 10th Squad. The majority of the quest is set on Ape Atoll, an island inhabited by civilised but unfriendly and high-level monkeys.
- Now is the time to put on your Monkey Madness Survival gear. You will encounter many powerful monsters (mostly monkeys) that will pack a punch to low levels. These monsters will attack with either melee or range, so wear some good melee armour (or at least the best melee armour you have).

Chinning on OSRS is a widely used method for training medium to high level Ranged in Runescape. Using chinchompas, which is a members-only ranged weapon, against Skeletal or Maniacal monkies can get you upwards of 300,000 – 650,000 experience PER hour. These little creatures cause area of effect damage, and with a hefty range and prayer bonus, you could see why the rates are so high. If you’ve wanted to see that 99 skillcape for quite some time, chinning is the way to do it proficiently. Okay, let’s get to the juice of the guide.

Inventory Setup
Since you really won’t use food because you’ll be using protection prayer during actual combat, you’ll want to bring a good amount of prayer potions, range potions & some super restores. Your inventory should look something like this. If you have low or medium HP, it is recommended to take 3 or 4 sharks with you. During the trip in the cave you will be hit a few times from the falling debris.
Note: if you have a monkey greegree it is recommended to take it with you, this will make all of the monkey NPCs in Kruk’s dungeon non-aggressive.
Locations
There are two different locations for chinning on OSRS. One requiring the start or completion of Monkey Madness I, and the other location requiring the start or completion of Monkey Madness II.
Monkey Madness I Location
Get geared up, fill your inventory, it’s time to hunt some skeletal monkeys! To get to the first location , you’re going to make your way to the Ape Atoll tunnel. The quickest way to get here is by using the Spirit Tree at the grand exchange, and traveling to the Tree Gnome Stronghold. From here, head north into the Grand Tree and go up to the second floor and speak with ‘Daero’. You may use the Ape Atoll teleport spell after the completion of Recipe for Disaster.
Osrs Quest Rewards
He will throw a blindfold on you and bring you to Waydar, speak with Waydar and he will bring you back to Crash island. Finally, from here speak with Lumdo and he will bring you to Ape Atoll.
Alright, now that we’ve gotten through all of that it’s time to get to Kruk’s dungeon, which is found in the north-west corner of the island. You will come across a dungeon just to the west of where you appear on the island, climb down this ladder and refer to the image below for your route on where to begin chinning.
Once there, you’ll find a ceiling you can safely stand under. Be sure to switch worlds to an empty one if someone is there, and you’re ready to start killing skeletal monkeys!
Monkey Madness II Location
With the arrival of the new Monkey Madness II quest, that also entails another spot for chinning! Similar to the first location, you’re going to want to head to Ape Atoll. Of course, it’s always recommended to bring a greegree with you, so this way the monkeys don’t attack you on your way there.
As with the first location, head to the Grand Tree. The quickest way to get here without using the Ape Atoll teleport is by using the Spirit Tree and traveling to the Gnome Stronghold. Run north, and head up the ladder, and speak with Daero. He will blindfold you and take you to Waydar, speak with him and he will bring you to Lumdo. Finally, he will take you to Ape Atoll.
When you get near Ape Atoll, you’ll need to run west to the gates. You will see a dungeon icon on your minimap, this is the entrance for the first location. You’ll want to run toward the Ape Atoll gates and then head north a bit. You’ll see the glider on your minimap, the dungeon is hidden under the vines near the glider up against a tree. ‘Investigate’ this area and you will be taken into the dungeon.
Head down the south tunnel and you will come to an area with a dodgy ground. You must follow the northern passage and in order to do this successfully you have to step on only the patted down areas. Once past this obstacle, you will reach a good amount of smaller tier agility obstacles. Complete all of them, and you will reach a dark hole.
Note: If you fail any of the obstacles, it will bring you into the monkey madness 1 location and you will be attacked by maniacal monkeys. If this happens, run down one of the paths until you find a vine to climb up. You will be taken back to the dodgy ground and have to try again.
Grand Tree Osrs
It is recommended to have a decent agility level for this method, since that factors into how well you will do on the obstacles. Visit our 1-99 Agility guide for more information!
Once past the obstacles, pray protect from melee and run east into the large cavern. Once there, run into the north-eastern most corner of the room.
You will want to run back and forth between 1 tile away from where you start attacking them. Once you see your range experience drop, click the tile next to you to get the most efficient swarm of monkeys. This will greatly improve your hourly experience.
How to Kill Maniacal Monkeys
Once you’re safe from the falling debris and find a world that is just for you, it’s time to get some crazy range exp. If you’ve brought your greegree, you can now equip your chinchompas and they will automatically aggro you. Be sure to protect from melee and use the Hawk Eye prayer for a 10% range bonus.
This prayer is more efficient than using eagle eye simply because hawk eye drains 10 prayer points per minute, whereas Eagle Eye drains 17 prayer points per minute. It just isn’t worth the extra loss of prayer points for a 5% extra boost.
The most effective way to ‘chin’ is by running from the south-western safespot to the north-eastern safespot to keep the chins aggro, and as many as possible. Another consideration, after these guys die their bones are going to stack causing only one of them to spawn back at a time. To prevent this, simply pick up the bones and drop them on another tile.
When the monkeys seem to not aggro you any longer, simply run a bit east and then run back. You’ll notice the monkeys will start to attack you again.
Experience Per Hour / Chins Used
Monkey Madness I Location
Depending on your gear and supplies, you can see upwards of 300-320K Ranged experience an hour. Of course, if you’re away watching TV or paying little attention it will drop a bit. Either way still one of the best methods in OSRS for Ranged experience.
You will use about 1,500 to 1,700 chins per hour using this method. It can be a bit expensive, and it’s never recommended to bring more than this, and actually preferred to bring less. You will not be able to use this many chinchompas in one trip, and if you get disconnected or there are some server issues you could log back in to nothing, and who wants that?
Monkey Madness II Location
![Desert Desert](https://i.gyazo.com/38145d13a0077a2ff65ed07cb3ce11db.png)
With the second location, you’ll see about double the hourly experience you would in the first location. There are quite a bit more monkeys who aggro to you in this location, and make for bigger EXP drops. You will see upwards of 600-650K experience per hour.
One thing to note about these guys, is that they actually drop food and prayer potions so your trips can last much longer. More often than not, I end up with more prayer potions than I started with. Wait until the monkeys stop aggroing you, take off your prayer and stock up on as many prayer potions as you can. To get them to aggro you again, simply run towards the way you came into the large cavern area and run back.
